RIAI Graphics Exhibition 2023

 

The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) and the JCt4 Graphics team are delighted to launch the "Find Your Fun" exhibition, in which students explored objects, buildings and spaces that they associate with fun.

The Applied Technology team is delighted to announce that registration for our Spring Elective workshop, “Exploring how the sensor circuit board can further enhance teaching and learning in Applied Technology” is now open. This face-to-face elective will take place in Applied Technology rooms in schools around the country. Details of each event and their location can be found in the advertisement below. Click on the image or the link below to access the registration form. Places in each event are limited to a maximum of twenty participants. Applicants will be treated on a first come basis.

Arts in Junior Cycle and the JCT Technologies team (JCt4), in collaboration with woodturner Willie Creighton, are pleased to offer ‘Get your World Turning’ workshops again in early 2023.

 

Eight workshops will take place in four school venues over the coming weeks in counties: Sligo, Kerry, Offaly, and Waterford. Workshops are now full but you can still register for workshop waiting lists. Every year, the National Gallery of Ireland, together with dozens of museums, galleries, libraries and cultural organisations from all over the island of Ireland, encourage people to get drawing on National Drawing Day.

 

The range of events include sketching workshops and activities which align very well with the Technologies subjects and are appropriate for all levels of engagement.

The JCt4 Wood Technology team were delighted to recently record a two-part podcast with GMIT Letterfrack Head of Department, Paul Leamy for the latest episode of the ‘Hands On’ podcast series. In part one of this recording, Paul talks about the joy of designing and making with wood and the importance of developing the key principles of hand skills at GMIT Letterfrack, the National Centre for Excellence in Furniture Design and Technology.

The Graphics team have recently created some new resources as a support for teachers as their students engage with CBA 1: Communicating through sketching. These include a PowerPoint presentation entitled ‘Exploring Classroom-Based Assessment 1’ and a supporting interactive poster and video.

The State Examinations Commission (SEC) published sample examination papers (common level) for each of the suite of Technology subjects on Friday 22nd October. The sample papers are provided as a guide on the structure and content of the assessment in accordance with the subject specification. The Department of Education published on 15th March 2021 guidelines for schools entitled “Assessment and Reporting on Students’ Learning - Junior Cycle 2021”. The guideline documents can be found here.
The Department of Education also recently published an infographic titled “Returning to School Guidance for teaching, learning and assessment Post-primary students”, March 2021. This infographic will automatically download by clicking here.

The JCt4 team have developed a infographic resource based on a recent document published by the DES, available here. This infographic visually displays some advice for teachers of practical subjects around the safe implementation of the practical aspects of these subjects. We thought this would be a beneficial visual aid for students and teachers across the suite of Technology subjects. The resource can be found at https://jct.ie/technologies/resources

The JCt4 team have developed a planning resource which may aid teachers across the suite of Junior Cycle Technology subjects. This resource was developed in response to teacher feedback over the past year in relation to subject planning. Having taken teacher feedback on board, the JCt4 Technologies team are delighted to present a new Excel Digital Planner for each of the Technology subjects.

The Excel Digital Planner, accompanying information sheet and a tutorial screencast on useful features can be found under Planning in the Technologies subjects.
